The unwelcome Bus Gate on Cumberland Road is now operational and a camera has been installed to identify unauthorized vehicles that pass through the gate. Bristol City Council have offered no coherent reasons for the gate. John Smith (Interim Executive Director: Growth & Regeneration) failed to respond to the many objections to the gate, simply asserting that ‘the scheme would achieve elements of the wider transport policy aspirations of the City Council’s overall transport strategy.’ Cold comfort to the many Bristol city residents seriously inconvenienced by the gate or to those living close to Coronation Road where pollution is likely to rise thanks to traffic congestion and queuing vehicles. But it will obviously be a lucrative source of funds to a financially-strapped City Council.
